RobertLovesPi’s comments, in LackofBelief:
Hmmmm. I wonder what my black, lesbian, atheist friends would say about this. They would obviously be in a group uniquely positioned to understand this … oh, yeah — I don’t HAVE to wonder, for we’ve discussed it.
Many of my friends who are both gay or lesbian, and atheists, say the “coming out” process is quite similar in each case.
I’ve also heard, from the smaller group of friends I first described, of something white atheists don’t have to face: losing one’s “black card,” as the saying goes, when coming out as an atheist — which means that, at least for American blacks, being an atheist often means complete ostracism by the black community (including friends and family, in most cases) — plus, of course, to others, they’re still black women, and are treated as such, just as before.
These friends, of course, don’t enjoy racism, sexism, homophobia, or anti-atheistic bigotry — they’re all awful — but, at least among my friends, when I hear them single out one or the other as the worst, it is usually the bigotry they face for rejecting religion … and why should this happen to anyone? Why is this not considered a personal choice, by everyone?
Now I’m all pissed off. Things that have hurt my friends — and this sort of crap HAS — tend to really get to me. Time to log off Tumblr now….
