Some comments from RobertLovesPi:
- It’s 10:25, and worth every moment.
- Americans who have never left North America (such as myself) will be struck by just how different life is, in England, when it comes to religion. I’m not unfamiliar with England, but I was surprised by such things in this video, repeatedly.
- In America, we have to worry about the Chrstian right taking over. In England, some are fretting that Christianity is all-but going away — because no one wants to bother with it any more, basically. The fact that England could go from fervently religious to effectively apatheist … gives me hope. Perhaps, some day, here?
Secularism v Religion in National Affairs - Post-Warsi Discussion on BBC Newsnight
participants:
Prof Richard Dawkins
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali
Ruth Gledhill, Religious Affairs Editor, The Times
Newsnight anchor: Gavin Esler
This discussion results from recent articles in national newspapers by Sayeeda Warsi, the co-chairman of the UK Conservative Party, and a tax-payer-funded visit by her to the Vatican.
I suspect Warsi, a Muslim, is using her position to further her personal agenda, viz to promote religion in national affairs, including government policy.
She trended all day on twitter (London), with the overwhelming majority of tweeters expressing very strong opposition to her views.
She might just find that her strategy backfires.
